Rule 17Change of balls

How and when balls are changed in a match.

Points a to dPlain-English notes marked In practice
  1. a
Organisers announce in advance the brand and type of ball, whether two or three balls are used, and the change policy.
  2. b
Balls may be changed after a set odd number of games (the warm-up counts as two games, a tie-break as one), or at the start of a set. A change is not made at the start of a tie-break but postponed to the second game of the next set.
  3. c
A missed change is made when the pair that should have served with new balls next serves.
  4. d
Lost or damaged balls are replaced as soon as possible. Play never continues with a single ball. A ball lost in the first two games after a change is replaced with a new one; later, with a used ball of similar wear.
